After becoming a first-time mother, filmmaker Nanfu Wang (HOOLIGAN SPARROW) reflects on her childhood in China, deciding to turn her camera on the experience and history of the country’s one-child nation policy. From 1979 to 2015, China’s government enforced families to have one-child households, favoring male babies, as it waged a “population war.” With co-director Jialing Zhang, Wang thoughtfully examines the social and personal effects of state-enforced sterilizations, kidnappings, child abandonment and propaganda.

Winner of this year’s Sundance U.S. Documentary Grand Jury Prize and the Grand Jury Prize at Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, ONE CHILD NATION is a powerful and personal investigation into the silent, collective trauma of generations. –Sarah Harris
